William B. Leahy is a graduate (B.A., English) of The Ohio State University, as well as The Ohio State University College of Law (J.D.), where he was selected as the outstanding oral advocate in the second year class and was a member of the national moot court team. From 1969 to 1973, Bill served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps, during which time he prosecuted felony cases and served as a legal advisor to Brigadier General George S. Patton (son of the famous World War II General) on a board of inquiry. Bill arrived at Thompson Hine LLP in 1973 where, for 30 years, he served as a trial lawyer with a major emphasis on products liability cases; wrongful death cases; other personal injury and tort cases; commercial cases; insurance coverage cases; and construction litigation and arbitration. For 10 years, Bill served Thompson Hine as chair of its ethics committee. He also formed an ADR practice group at Thompson Hine; and served on its lawyer personnel and diversity committees. Bill commenced serving as a mediator 16 years ago.
In 2003, Bill was recruited to join Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, LLP as a shareholder in its Cleveland office, at which firm he continued his practice as a litigator and mediator as before. He served as chair of Buckingham, Doolittle’s ADR group; as chair of its conflicts/ethics committee for five years; as chair of its litigation group associate training committee; and as a member of its diversity committee. He serves as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, teaching pre-trial practice and alternative dispute resolution. Bill retired from Buckingham Doolittle in October, 2009, and now practices as a mediator, arbitrator and legal ethics consultant in addition to his teaching duties at CWRU Law School.
Bill has represented clients in the United States Supreme Court; United States Courts of Appeals for the Third, Fourth and Sixth Circuits; Supreme Court of Ohio; numerous state and federal trial courts and state intermediate appellate courts in Ohio; and state or federal trial courts in Alabama, California, the District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin. He has appeared as counsel in numerous arbitrations, mediations and other alternate dispute resolution proceedings in Ohio, as well as in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.
Bill has been trained as a mediator by the CPR Institute for Dispute Resolution and the United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio. He has authored articles in the National Law Journal; the CPR Institute publication, Alternatives; the Defense Research Institute publication, For The Defense; and Crain’s Cleveland Business on the subject of mediation. He has served as a presenter at the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Ohio, beginners’ and advanced courses for ADR neutrals; as an instructor on the subject of alternative dispute resolution for the Ohio CLE Institute; as a presenter at the April, 2013, meeting of the Section of Dispute Resolution of the American Bar Association; as a presenter on ethics in negotiation; and as a presenter on the topic, “The Future of ADR in the Roberts Era”, at a 2009 forum sponsored by the Case Western Reserve Law Review at which distinguished law professors from across the nation also presented. For several years, Bill served as a judge for the CPR Institute Awards for Excellence in ADR. In 2010, he was selected by Case Western Reserve University to serve as a mediator for its Pilot Faculty Conciliation and Mediation Program.
Bill has served as a mediator in a wide variety of litigated cases and other disputes, including but not limited to wrongful death, products liability, other personal injury, legal malpractice, commercial, property, construction and insurance coverage disputes.
